Additional Performance Metrics
Power Consumption
Power consumption in NAS systems is crucial for reducing operational costs and minimizing environmental impact. The AS5404T has very low energy consumption at all times. Using a power analyzer, we noticed a power draw of around 1.6W in sleep mode, between 17 and 22W during idle operation, and an average of 27W with the system in full use (momentary peak consumption was 31W). These numbers are exceptionally low, even lower than those reported by the manufacturer; however, this results from using SATA SSDs instead of traditional HDDs.
Heat Management
Heat management is a critical issue that directly relates to the lifespan of both the drives and the NAS. The external power brick ensures that heat dissipation occurs outside the NAS, and replacing the brick is easier in case of failure. We noticed that the temperatures of the drives were consistently higher on the side of the NAS that doesn’t have the vents above the drives, while those below the vents were always cooler. This may directly affect the drives’ lifespan in warmer climates, especially for spinning ones.
Noise Levels
The output noise of a NAS, especially for home use, is very important. You would be forgiven for believing this system is fanless, as there is no noticeable noise during its operation in room temperatures of up to 28 degrees Celcius, even at full utilization after 10 minutes of continuous operation.
RAID 5 initialization time
While RAID Operation may occur only a handful of times in a NAS’s lifespan, using SSDs meant that the initialization of our RAID 5 Volume, with the four SATA SSDs, took one hour and three minutes.
Boot, Reboot & Shut Down
The boot, reboot, and shutdown times were also quite low and are presented in the table below.
Time to… | |
---|---|
Boot | 106s |
Reboot | 128s |
Shut Down | 70s |
The time to shutdown may be 70 seconds, but the drive activity stopped after the 26th second.

You’re complaining about software??? It’s based on Linux so go complain to them about their lil OS kit that still has only 1/3 to 1/2 of a complete GUI when we’re almost 1/4 of the way through the 21rst century. I use my NAS for storage, not computing, not transcoding, just storage since that’s what it was intended to do, even says so in the dam name, Netwok Attached Storage or did you forget that lil acronym? You seem really concerned about the piece of cardboard the product came in, maybe you should do cardboard reviews only, dedicating an entire page of your review to a piece of cardboard that surrounds the product is just stupid it has nothing to do with performance which is why I came not to browse some anime gallery. Needless to say not impressed with your lil article and won’t be returning just not worth it with that type of content.
Thanx for your comment. Any feedback is appreciated, but you are a bit over the edge, I think. By being ironic you don’t get anything. The reviewer added anything he believed it was worth to mention. If you dont like sth u could write it, in a formal way. It would have the same impact, believe me. Now, if u dont like the content, u are not obligated to stay or read anything in this site. There are countless other sites to visit, and might like your harsh comments as well, so feel free. I wish u the best.
