AMD Radeon RX 7800 XT & RX 7700 XT Performance, Power Analysis & Noise Output

AMD released today its offers for demanding QHD (1440p) gaming, the RX 7800 XT & RX 7700 XT. The former can even handle 4K resolutions, depending on the game and the graphics setting. The RX 7800 XT starts at $499 / €549 and the RX 7700 XT is at $449 / €489, so the price difference between these two is low. Read the full review to check which of the two meets your demands.

The RX 7800 XT & RX 7700 XT debut today, providing strong solutions in the QHD category. Both are based on the AMD Navi 32 GPU, which is between the Navi 33 chip used in the Radeon RX 7600 (32 compute units) and the flagship Navi 31 die used in the Radeon RX 7900 XT/XTX (84/96 compute units).

The new AMD cards use the RDNA architecture, with up to 60 unified compute units (CUs) and, new AI accelerators, and 2nd generation raytracing accelerators. Unfortunately, AMD is one generation behind NVIDIA in raytracing hardware, but it tries to catch up. The RDNA 3 architecture supports, among others, the DisplayPort 2.1 specification, allowing for extra-high refresh rates at high resolutions. Moreover, the silicon’s media engine supports AV1 encoding.

The Radiance Display Engine used by RDNA 3 supports up to four displays depending on the resolution and refresh rate.

Example Resolutions Max # of supported Displays
4K144 4
4K240 2
4K480 1
6K60 4
8K60 2
8K120/144/165 1

Compared to their predecessor, the new AMD GPUs have slightly increased total board power (TBP) values, as shown in the table below.

With the RX 7700 XT, AMD is after the RTX 4060 Ti, while the RX 7800 XT aims at the RTX 4070. All the basic specs of all cards mentioned above are in the table below.

AMD’s cards come with more and faster memory, and the DP 2.1 provides a massive increase in bandwidth, too. Currently, the NVIDIA RTX 4070 starts at 600 dollars, and the RTX 4070 Ti’s starting point is $200 higher, at $800. This means that if AMD manages to keep the prices of the RX 7800 XT & RX 7700 XT at the announced levels, $499 and $449, the more expensive model will still have a 100 dollar price tag compared to the RTX 4070, while the RX 7700 XT has the same price as the RTX 4060 Ti 16 GB. If performance is high and the announced prices don’t increase after the release, AMD’s new products might push NV to slash its prices in the mid-GPU segment.
