Montech AX120 PWM Fan Review

Epilogue

The Montech AX120 PWM is advertised to have good performance at cooling solutions besides chassis, but in my tests, I found that this doesn’t stand because of its low static pressure. This fan has enough airflow, making it suitable for use in chassis to remove thermal load, but you should avoid it for coolers, heatsinks, and AIO radiators. At 13 dollars, its price is fair, given the ARGB lighting, but if you don’t care for it, the Arctic P12 PWM PST is a better option, achieving notably higher static pressure at lower noise output. For high static pressure at 30 dBA, the Raijintek Ageras 12 is a good option, offering ARGB lighting at a price lower than the Montech AX120.

What made me skeptical about the Montech AX120 PWM is that the brand claims a hydro dynamic bearing, but in the photos it provides, a rifle bearing is clearly shown. I believe that marketing isn’t aware of what a rifle bearing looks like, so this is an honest mistake. Still, it would be nice to see the marketing material fixed fast, not to provide incorrect information to consumers. Hydro dynamic bearings are among the best and thus expensive. In contrast, rifle bearings are enhanced sleeved bearings, which cannot reach the performance and reliability of fluid dynamic and hydro dynamic bearings, costing less.

Pros:
  • Affordable
  • Decent build quality
  • High enough airflow
  • PWM control
  • ARGB lighting
Cons:
  • Rifle bearing and not HDB (as advertised)
  • Low static pressure (huge deviation from the claimed performance)
  • No Daisy-chain option
