You will find the best ATX v3.x & PCIe 5.x Ready PSU Picks 2024 in this article. PSUs compatible with the most recent ATX v3.x specs are way more expensive than the ones meeting the requirements of the previous ATX specs. You will probably wonder whether you should invest in them or buy an older-generation PSU and save money. Although none of today’s graphics cards has high enough power spikes to justify the demanding ATX v3.x requirements for power excursions, as it calls them, no one knows what the future GPUs will bring. The newer ATX v3.1 and PCIe 5.1 standards are already in effect. Since the significant difference between ATX v3.0 and 3.1 is mainly in the connector, from 12VHPWR to 12V-2×6, with the high-power cables remaining the same, I expect most ATX v3.0 PSUs to get slight updates for ATX v3.1 compatibility. A downside of the ATX v3.1 spec is that it allows for a lower hold-up time, from 17ms (ATX v3.0) to 12 ms.

  2. It’s a shame, my acquisition of Fsp Ti pro 1000w for around 275 euro has been rescheduled for more than a month and all the other places are now empty.
    I decided to take something cheaper. For now I have a 7800x3d and a 3080ti, but I plan to upgrade to at least a 5080+ next gen. (I hope)

    Which of these (all 1000w) is optimal:
    BQ Straight Power 12 – 204 e / Pure power 160 e
    Msi A1000G – 193 e
    Corsair Shift 1000w – 161 e
    Montech Titan Gold – 195 e

    And the second question, do you use UPS? If so, does something like 1500va/900 make sense for a high-end setup? Above that, prices increase dramatically.

    1. The Corsair Shift is the most affordable, so I would go with it. Just make sure that it is ok with your chassis.
      A 1500VA (true sine) UPS will be fine yes.

  7. running a 7800x3d w/ 4090 + AIO and many fans right now. currently deciding on a <$300 1000+ W PSU rn. I think it'll likely be NZXT C1200 or Super Flower Leadex VII XG 1300. Which would you suggest? Either or an alternative?

    biggest concern is the potential for coil whine and too much noise. cheaper is better obviously but i've already spent a good deal on the 4090…

  8. Where is ATX 3 2000W PSU?
    How am I supposed to power up Intel Xeon w7-2945X on Asus Pro WS W790E-SAGE SE motherboard?
    I mean, Xeon in XMP profile and watercooled can take ~630W alone + 2x RTX4090 (2x 300W), that is 1230W in total, while using HALF of available PCI lanes (64 lanes for this processor). Guess how much power would be needed for somobody using Xeon w7-3XXX series! New Xeons are PCI5.0 so there is legitimate reason to go for ATX3 PSU. Common producers, where is my juice?
    I can have a separate dedicated electric line in my home, no problemo. Standard home electrical installations in Europe use 2,5mm cables that can carry 20A of current. So in theory I can feed almost 230V * 20A of 4600 Watts from the wall.
    Come on, give us something better.

  9. Hello, I’m trying to troubleshoot my system having (likely power related) reboots during gaming.
    A 5800x3d, 7900xtx with a Corsair RM850.
    I know a great 850W should be enough, but due to the nature of issue, I want a 1000W instead. I asked a few local shops for 1000W PSUs and found the following models are all around USD$250 equivalent:
    Corsair RM1200x
    TUF 1200W
    Seasonic Prime PX1000
    Seasonic Vertex GX1200
    (Unsure about ATX3.0 compliance. 12pins are not needed for now.)
    I want to be extra safe, but also want very low noise level. What is the safest pick here? Does it make sense to drop to a 1000W model for RMx or Vertex?

    1. 1000W should be more than enough for your system, but the 7900XTX has high power spikes.
      Better invest on an ATX v3.x PSU that can handle them, so go for the Seasonic Vertex GX1200

  10. I received my FSP Hydro Ti and it is quite nice and even minimized coil whine from my old rtx.
    I also have a 4090 FE coming soon and overall I don’t have to worry much about safety as long as there is a new 12v-2×6 header on the card, right?

    I’m currently having ‘be quiet! Straight Power 12 850W’, but unfortunately, its fan has terrible noise. I found out their other models are all having the same issue (https://www.overclock.net/threads/be-quiet-dark-power-13-fan-noise.1803931).

    Now, after reading your review, I’m really impressed with FSP Hydro Ti Pro 1000W and thinking about buying it. Although, as I run RTX 4080 and 7800X3D, I don’t really need 1000W and would rather buy 850W. Did you have a chance to test 850W model? Can we assume it will show results as good as 1000W model?

    1. Hi! Unfortunately, FSP hasn’t sent me the 850W unit for review so far. According to them it doesn’t sell as well as the 1000W unit, so they wanted to focus more on the latter.

    2. How much cheaper 850w is in your country? In my case, 1000w (260€) was cheaper than the smaller version so it was no-brainer.
      Since you’ve seen the tests, you’ve also seen that the performance drop at lower loads is so low that it doesn’t matter.

      1. 850W is slightly cheaper, but money is not the concern. I mostly care what suits my system better and what is a better product.

    Thank you for a great (as always) in-depth article.

    I´m currently having issues with a brand new system ( 2 weeks old). .

    So yesterday when i plugged in my new 165hz 32″ IPS monitor and started a game i would start hearing an unhealthy loud vibrating sound (not a typical coil-whine sound) from the PSU ( i put a tube in my ear to hear that it acutally comes from the PSU and not the GPU or any other component).
    It ramps up when the GPU wattage goes up to 400 ish (under full load) and also when it goes down. I can´t hear anything under idle or inbetween.

    This is super-frustrating as i can´t pinpoint if the issue is caused by the PSU or any other component causing something to vibrate in the PSU? Is my PSU too weak for my system? RMA?

    1. 7900XTX has high power spikes, but still your PSU should cope without issues. Is there something blocking the fan inside the PSU? A cable or something?

    1. Just to be safe and future proof, I would suggest 1200W. Because 7900XTX has some nasty power spikes.

      You could do with a good 1000W unit, though, like the FSP Hydro Ti Pro. Else I would suggest RM1200x Shift and Vertex GX-1200. Then DeepCool PX1200P and Montech Titan 1200

        I am not very expert with PSUs and having one concern if I get 1200 W PSU, wouldn’t 1200W draw more power from wall compare to 1000W when doing normal work not gaming?
        Or is it like PC will use the amount of power from PSU it needs and it will not put impact on electricity bills and PC?

  14. I don’t like the way the noise is approathed. For me, Seasonic PRIME PX-1600 is much quiter than Seasonic PRIME TX-1300 just because it holds passive mode standing silent til 600+ Watts, whilst 1300W one keeps just until 500+ Watts. Since the price is pratically the same, nevermind buying the 1600W variant even you just need 1300W or few. Am I missing something?

    I recently built 7800x3d/4090 rig. I went with XPG Core Reactor II 1200W as it was one of the few alternatives available. However it’s TIER B. Do you think I am fine with this particular PSU? Thanks!

    1. Where did you see Tier B? This tier thing is tiresome. Check this article, which provides all the necessary info, and also check the Cybenetics report for PSUs not included. This XPG PSU is fine.

  16. Hi Aris, first and foremost thank you for your effort, it‘s great to get some help searching through the psu jungle!

    I have a question with regards to the Thermaltake Toughpower GF3 750W and could use your professional opinion, if you can spare some time.

    I bought one and i‘m undecided if i should keep it or return unopened. While the psu seems to perform great overall, the ripple measurements between 40-90 % load seem to behave really weird.
    In your review on Techspot the PSU suddenly jumps to over 40ms over the whole range . Is this increase in ripple some cause for concern and worth the switch to something akin to the Corsair RM750x SHIFT, especially for long term usage of the unit?
    The high ripple seems out of line compared to almost all other psu‘s in this range. It’s supposed to power an Amd 5600x and a Rtx 4070.

      The jump from > 40mv on the 12v rail from 40-90 % load and then back to good values on 110/110% load.

      Maybe i’m overthinking it, but it was such an outlier to all the other psu test, i thought asking could give me some peace of mind.

  19. Hello. First of all thank you for your excellent work. I only found this website today which I am still exploring and reading the articles.

    I would like to ask you for opinion, because it’s been 7 days and I can’t make my mind on the PSU (which is my last part missing).
    Pcpartpicker says my current spec is around 600w (i9-14900k + Asus Proart 4060 Ti 16G OC). I should upgrade GPU later when (if) prices come down – and I am okay if I need to buy another PSU when that happens, so for now, I am trying to focus on the current new build spec.

    1) i am thinking in 850w for PSU, is this reasonable or a 1000w PSU would be more efficient?

    2) I was thinking on Corsair RM850x, but the cables with capacitors (first time builder here) are very thick and I think it will give me trouble on installing them. My question is: do we really need cables with capacitors? Or I am completely fine going without it? I just can’t understand if the capacitors in cables are a good think, more stable, more reliable, more efficient (which I would prefer) or if i won’t loose anything with cables without capacitors. I know it has something to do with ripple and coil whine(i think?). But after reading (a lot) I still can’t understand if it’s better with.

    3) Also looking into Seasonic Focus GX 850 ATX3.0. It is a recent model and I can’t find reviews for it (also not in cybenetics or psu tier list).
    Is it a good PSU? The 1000w version is on cybenetics (with Gold and A- on noise), but I don’t know if I can use this for the 850w version.
    Also, why Seasonic doesn’t have capacitors in cables?

    1. I would suggest a 1000W PSU, because the 14900K has huge power spikes, and combined with a power-hungry GPU (in the future), it can push the PSU, a lot.

      Capacitors are used only when there is not enough space on the PCB for more, to suppress filter ideally. It is best if a PSU doesn’t have cables with caps in general.

      Look at the RM1000x Shift, if you can work with its side modular panel, or the Seasonic GX-1000. Both are very good. The new Seasonic Focus just landed on our lab.

        I will buy a 1000w then :).
        I am afraid that the shift won’t work well with my case, but I’ll try to look it up.
        But if you also say the Seasonic GX-1000 is also good, then I will prefer this one, as the cables are more easy to deal with. The cybenetics results are good (from my limited understanding) and I also trust Seasonic brand.

        In last case scenario, if the Seasonic cables without capacitors have some instability (or ripple or cause coil whine) in the future, I can always switch to another, but I think i’ll be good.

        Glad the new Seasonic Focus are in your lab for review. Do you have an estimated time for publishing the results? Just to check if it is worth the wait for your review :).

        Last question (considering “money” is not necessarily an issue), betwen Corsair&Seasonic models, is it worth to look into higher end models? (better than RMx and Focus GX)?
        If possible let me know, if you suggest something so that I look into ir, or just go with the focus gx.

  20. Im trying to decide between the Seasonic PX-1600 platinum ($500 at Amazon) and the Seasonic TX-1600 titanium ($600 at Amazon as the time of this post, Jan 20, 2024). I plan to have 2 4090s (Suprim liquid X) for AI model training (of course small models, since massive models take hundreds of specialized nvidia chips) and some rendering. its the TX worth the extra $100?

    1. From the moment, you will pay so much for the GPUs, and I believe it is worth the trouble to pay an additional 100 dollars to get the most efficient PSU, which will save you some money on electricity and will also run cooler.

    I recently upgraded my PC (https://pcpartpicker.com/list/P99vmD), but the PSU I bought (Corsair RM850e) is not working az expected. It has an incredibly loud coil whine, and a very annoying fan bearing as well. I would like to replace it, but I’m not sure what should I get, after burning myself with the previous one.

    I would like something that is quiet. I think I would prefer one with Fluid Dynamic Bearing (I generelly hear bad things about ball and sleeve bearing) and with a Zero RPM mode that can be turned off (Corsair RM850e’s Zero RPM mode cannot be turned off, and sometimes the fans start spinning even when the PC is idle).

    Also I’m very lost about the 12VHPWR to 12V-2×6 thing. As far as I know, the 4070 Super has a 12V-2×6 connector and I also got a an adapter cable with it (on one end I can plug two 8 pin connectors, on the other end it has a 12V connector, which I can plug into the GPU).

    What should I get? My budget is around $150-$200.

    1. You could look at the RM850x Shift, a different platform from what you have if you can work it out with its modular panel. There is also the Seasonic Vertex GX-850. If you can find the Super Flower Leadex VII XG 850W, this is a great PSU, too!

        My problem with the RM850x Shift is that you can’t disable the zero rpm mode. Seasonic Vertex GX-850 looks pretty good, but should I use the 12VHPWR slot on it, or use two 8-pin PCI cables with the adapter cable I got?

      2. I looked into the Asus ROG-STRIX-850G-AURA-GAMING as well. Out of the two, (Vertex and ROG-STRIX), which one would you recommend?

    I purchased a Seasonic Vertex PX-1200 for this build but am now having second thoughts. Would you recommend I consider the Seasonic Prime TX-1600 instead? Looking for top performance per ATX 3.X / PCIE 5.0 specification, low noise, and reliability. Cost is not a consideration.

    Amazing work on the reviews. Haven’t seen this level of detail since the Jonny Guru era.

  24. I would like to emphasize how much I hate this form of table where each record is based on percentage points instead of watts. It’s hard to read, and what’s the point?

    For example, I would buy a PSU of, for example, 1600W, even if my system did not require such power, instead of a 1200W if the former has a, for example, a higher low noise noise range for the most part of time.

    I do not know if i was clear.

    I would love to see, instead of 10%, 20%, 30%, and so on, 100W, 200W, 300W (or with a smaller scale, like 50W, 100W, 150W… etc.) and so on. It would be much easier to compare models.

  26. Why did the BeQuiet Dark Power Pro 13 1600W disappear from the lists? It was supposedly added in August but nowhere to be found. Is it because it’s performance is too low? Removed in November? I thought it was a reasonable contender vs the Seasonic lineup.

  27. Good evening, congratulations for the reviews, full of details and useful info, this allowed me to understand many things about this topic.
    I’m asking for your support because I’m building my new pc and for the PSU I have some serious issues.
    The PSU has to handle AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D processor and RTX 4070 SUPER, so not difficult task. The case is the coolermaster 500 flatpack that supports the ATX format, but anyway many reviewers recommend a smaller format.
    I live in Italy and I assure you that in this period it’s really hard to find a good PSU for this build that doesn’t make too much noise, that has PCIe 5 and that isn’t at a price completely out of the market.
    I’m even willing to spend more than I would have a couple of months ago but I need to be sure I’m buying a good product.

    1. A 750W PSU will be fine for you, but just in case, you can also get an 850W one.
      Some very good and relatively affordable are the Thermaltake GF A3 models—good performance at low prices and PCIe 5.0

    First i have to say the articles of yours are quite good. Haven’t seen this consistent reviews for a while.
    Now i want to ask you, you mentioned previously that some PSU models are getting updated to 12V-2×6 already, so that makes them ATX v3.1 now? And can you please recomend some models in 1000w category, that use the new 12V-2×6?

    1. MSI PSUs for instance use the new connectors as far as I know, and basically you can always get a Corsair or Super Flower PSU, which uses 2x 8pin on its modular board, so it is ATX v3.1 ready.

(Karma … i heard about the issues with this PSU, and for months it was working flawlessly … out of no where, my motherboard did not turn on, even though the leds were on, even the GPU and memory had the leds on … but no power on the motherboard at all… connected an oldie hx450 to test, and everything was running flawlessly…) Luckily i got everything on warranty, but now choosing a new PSU.

    Between HX1500 ATX3.0 and the Seasonic TX-1600 ATX3.0 … i know you will say the TX but, there’s a 200+ euros difference between both.
    1. In your opinion, would the HX be a better buy ?
    2. Do the 2 x 8pin connects > 12VRPWR deliver the needed power for a 4090?

    Although i can buy either of them, i just want to buy the right one without having second thoughts in the future… or because it could be better, or because i spent too much and i could use something cheaper 😀

    1. Hm I had it removed from the DB, to bring it back now since CWT assured me that all problems were fixed. They told me that the new batches are good, apparently you were unlucky to have one of the older ones.
      Between these two the TX-1600 is on another level. If you don’t need this kind of efficiency, go with the HX1500.

      2x 8pin can deliver the same current as the 12+4 12V-2×6 socket.

  30. Thank you for your tests and work. I have a few questions and I would appreciate your answer.

    1. Have you also thought about a tab with all the power supplies on one chart? Currently, you use ranges of 750W, 850W, etc. but it is not clear if choosing a 1000W power supply is not choosing a power supply one class higher than 1050W, because due to the power they will end up in separate rankings on your site.
    2. My second question is strongly related to the first one. I am looking for an overall allrounder ATX 3.0 PCIe Gen5 PSU (regardless of the offered power). For now, my choice is directed to FSP Hydro Ti Pro 1000W. Are there any power supplies that beat it for the title of overall allrounder (Performance/Efficiency/Noise/Transient Response)?

    1. a) usually we rank them at Wattage, since different systems, different needs.
      b) This FSP unit is the best in its class. In the overall performance chart you can see which one is close to it 🙂

        1. I am especially interested in comparing FSP Hydro Ti Pro 1000W to the models:
          1) Super Flower Leadex VII Gold 1200W
          2) NZXT C Gold 1200W
          3) Montech Titan Gold 1200W
          4) Thermaltake Toughpower GF3 1200W

        2. Sorry, I cannot provide an exact number because this requires me to spend lots of time digging in my database. It will be pretty high, though, be sure of that.

    2. Cool. That’s what I’ve been telling Aris for some time. The way things are diagrammed makes comparison a PITA. I hate this way of separating PSU models by power rating. Generally, the difference between a unit of, for example, 1000W to one of, for example, 1200W, in terms of results, is only in the matter of efficiency and noise. I mean that, often, it is more appropriate to buy an oversized unit to have (in addition to the overhead) a lower noise level in the most frequent use range.

      He is, without a doubt, the best hardware reviewer in the world. He is also one of the only ones who has the proper equipment. It’s a shame that these details are missing, but it’s understandable given the lack of time.

    1. Which mail you sent? They will honor the ten-year warranty if something happens. Of course.
      The people I know there don’t handle RMAs etc. it is not their category. But if you tell me the email you tried and you didn’t get a respond, I will inform them about that!

      First two are equal. I don’t know since I haven’t tested it, and neither I am not interested in testing products of this brand.

    What PSU would you recommend for an I5 13600K and a GPU (that i still have to buy) like a 4070 or 4070 Ti Super ?

    I was thinking of buying the “Fractal Design ION+ 2 Platinum 760W” PSU but maybe there’s a better choice ? Fractal Design is not known for making PSU…

    And maybe i should i buy a more powerful one like a 850W or 1000W, to be future proof ?

    1. I wouldn’t go with a Fractal Design PSU. The ION PSUs that we used in some of our test systems all died after 6-12 months of usage. An 850W unit will be fine; look at the Thermaltake GF A3 850 if you don’t want to spend a lot.

    Have you seen the 1STPLAYER NGDP ATX3.1 PSUs? Model name HA-1000BA4. Those are somehow cheap at my location ~125$, and the store adverts 10 year warranty. Do i just go for it if i want a decent kinda cheap PSU with latest standart, that i can put in my pc and forget? Or should i stay out of it? Really wanna hear your opinion

    System Build: 14900K, U12s air cooler, z790 mb, 48Gb DDR5, Nvidia FE 4080 super, m2 SSD x2, six case fans. Under 800W based on multiple estimators.

    Trying to decide between:
    Super Flower Leadex VII Gold XG 850W (Cybenetics Platinum)
    Super Flower Leadex VII Platinum Pro 850W (Cybenetics Platinum)
    Current prices are about the same. The Platinum Pro has new “9 pin universal” connectors. Gold XG has typical connectors.

    Any recommendation one versus the other?

        might be overkill for 4070 Super or Ti Super (I’m planning to upgrade to one of them)., I got an Ryzen 3700x which I might upgrade to a Ryzen 7700 down the road.
        Does 1000W make any sense?

            power is kinda expensive where I live. will the 1000W version affect the power bill or affect me in a bad way if my hardware only draws half that? or will it be better because it should run cooler?

  39. is one safe to asume that PSUs that have 8 pin connectors on the PSU side don’t need to do anthing to be ATX3.1 compatible since only the connector on the GPU and the one on the PSU side should be changed but only if also 16-pin 12HPWR ?
    this doesn’t sound right…the sense pins are missing on the PSU side if itsn’t a 16pin connector, so no protection there.

      1. there might be room, but if “Zero Watt” it’s not there it’s not there.
        we have to wait for new revisions of existing PSUs. if you bought a PSU 1 year ago with 2x8pin to 16pin connector, it’s not ATX 3.1 compatible.
        this is very sensitive information, yet I keep reading that some PSU makers where “smart” enough to use 2x8pin on the PSU side. it doesn’t make any difference what they used on the PSU side at the PSU release. no Zero Watt support on it no protection on PSU side and finally no ATX 3.1 certifcation.

  41. Can you do a full review on any of the rog strix aura g gaming psus? They’re really interesting for how exceptional their noise, voltage ripple and load regulation are and hold up time is really good too. Curious about the other features like protection though which are absent from the cybenetics report and your commentary really helps explain it as well. Regardless it seems to be the only other psu that can go toe to toe with the ax1600i in terms of how clean power it provides across all rails except while at half the price. 60% load till the fan starts is also crazy we need that teardown. Really cool how they’ve increased the size purely to make it cooler and quieter.

    As someone who had no idea what to look for when buying a new PSU, this was an amazing source and read in the last days.

    I’m about to build a new system next week and would greatly appreciate just some quick feedback on what 1000W PSU to pick.
    These are the PSU’s im looking at right now:

    Seasonic VERTEX PX-1000 (Plat) 190€
    Seasonic VERTEX GX-1000 (Gold) 150€
    Corsair RM1000x (Gold) 160€
    be quiet! Straight Power 12 (Plat) 190€
    be quiet! Pure Power 12 (Gold) 150€
    MSI MPG A1000G PCIE5 (Gold) 160€

    My budget is around 200€ (could go a bit above if its really good value) and I’m planing to keep the PSU for a pretty long time (my last 750W be quiet! PSU is doing his job for 12 years now).
    The FSP Hydro Ti Pro sadly costs 270€ here in Germany :/
    And the Corsair and MSI (Plat) models all cost ~220€.
