HP Portable SSD P900 1TB Review

Epilogue

The HP Portable SSD P900 1TB is a speedy SSD that will come in handy if you want to increase your laptop’s or gaming console’s storage space. To fully exploit its capabilities, you need a USB 3.2 Gen 2 x 2 port through which you will see close to 2000 MB/s transfer speeds. Actually, in read speeds, I saw a little higher than the advertised read speeds, while in write operations, the SSD was close to 1800 MB/s. This is in synthetic benchmarks since, in real-life conditions, the attained speeds are notably lower yet still fast enough for this kind of drive.

At the time of the review, I couldn’t find this drive in any of the major online stores, Amazon and Newegg. Given its specifications, a price close to 100 dollars will be fair for what it offers. Depending on your needs, you can choose among the three versions, with 512GB, 1 TB, and 2TB of storage space, before format. If you are into video editing and have a Mac where upgrading the internal storage is not an option, I would suggest going for the 2TB model.

The major pain for most portable SSD drives is the operating temperatures. During testing, my lab was extremely hot because I had removed most AC units to install them in the new building, where we will soon move. I’ve tried extended read and write operations on the drive at up to 34 degrees Celsius ambient, and I didn’t notice any performance drop or indication of the controller overheating. That said, if you plan on pushing an external SSD hard, it is preferable to have a small USB fan cooling it. This way, you will also increase its lifetime and performance if the controller gets too hot and throttles.
