Thermaltake Toughpower GF A3 650W PSU Review

The Thermaltake Toughpower GF A3 650W is the lowest capacity ATX v3.0 and PCIe 5.0 compatible PSU that I have evaluated so far. This means that it can deliver double its power for short periods (0.1ms) through its 12VHPWR cable, which is set at 300W max power output. 

The Thermaltake Toughpower GF A3 650W is not included in my best ATX v3.x & PCIe 5.x PSU picks article because I don’t have a 650W category yet!

I thought I had finished with the TT GF A3 reviews, only to be reminded by my colleagues at the lab that there is another unit left with 650W max power. This is a Cybenetics Platinum-certified unit with a relatively low average noise output, depicted by its Cybenetics A- (25-30 dB[A]) badge. It uses a fully modular cable design and is equipped with a fluid dynamic bearing fan from a less-known manufacturer. It is ten dollars more affordable than the GF A3 model with 750W max power, and it also has a 12VHPWR connector set at 300W. The provided ten-year warranty shows TT’s faith in these products and their manufacturer, HKC. I would be reluctant to provide such a long warranty mostly because of the unknown quality of the fan. The semi-passive mode, which can be deactivated, might take some burden off the fan if it lasts long; otherwise, it will do quite the opposite. In FDB fans, the most stressful period is during start-up, till the lubricant goes up to the bearing, so they are unsuitable for frequent start and stop operation.
