The Scythe Grand Tornado 120mm is a high-speed fan, offering increased static pressure and airflow, while its price is notably lower than competing offerings, with similar performance specs. This is Scythe’s flagsship fan, boasting an impressive 370,000h MTTF thanks to its advanced Sealed Pricesion Fluid Dynamic bearing.
This is the first time I encounter a fan with such a high Mean Time To Failure (MTTF). The term mean time between failures (MTBF) is used for repairable parts, while MTTF is used for non-repairable parts. The Scythe Grand Tornado, according to the brand’s statements, has an MTTF of 370,000h, which is impressive! Unfortunately, I cannot test that in my lab, but I can easily figure out the fan’s quality through testing. Besides the blade design, the bearing type is of vital importance.
The Grand Tornado uses Scythes SPFDB2 (Sealed Precision Fluid Dynamic Bearing 2) bearing, which I suspect is an improved FDB bearing. Like in other quality fans, a magnet increases the shaft’s stability during high speeds, reducing noise output and friction and positively affecting the product’s lifetime.
The Grand Tornado comes in two versions, one with a max speed of 2000 RPM and one with a max speed of 3000 RPM. I will review the later, which promises close to 100 CFM airflow and more than 5 mmAq static pressure.
