Noctua NH-D12L chromax.black Review – Compact & Expensive

Normalized Noise Tests

For these tests, I set the cooler’s fan(s) to speeds with noise output at the following predefined levels: 20/25/30/35/40 dBA. I skip the corresponding tests if the cooler’s fan(s) cannot reach some noise levels. Finally, I include a test where the cooler’s fan(s) spins at full speed.

Intel Results

CPU Temperature

This is the smallest among all air coolers I have evaluated so far in dimensions, so naturally, it cannot stand out from the crowd.

CPU Frequency

CPU frequencies are low compared to the rest of the coolers in these graphs.

CPU Wattage

The CPU’s TDP is lower than that of the rest of the coolers, which have larger dimensions (for air coolers) or are high-end AIOs.

Cooler Exhaust Temperature

I measure the temperature at the heatsink’s exhaust side.

AMD Results

This is the third cooler I have evaluated on my AMD system, so you will only find three results in the corresponding graphs. In time, there will be way more.

CPU Temperature

Only in the 20 dBA chart is the NH-D12L in the middle, but this doesn’t mean anything without checking the average CPU frequency and Wattage. In the rest of the graphs, the temperatures are higher than those of the AIOs, as expected.

CPU Frequency

The CPU clocks are notably lower for the NH-D12L.

CPU Wattage

We notice notably lower CPU power consumption because the cooling capabilities are not as high as a capable AIO.

Cooler Exhaust Temperature

I measure the temperature at the heatsink’s exhaust side.

  1. Why are you comparing a fan CPU cooler to AIO liquid coolers. Not really a fair comparison and not really useful to the consumers. Comparing the Noctura DH-12L to a Be quiet Dark Rock cooler is a better comparison.

      1. Third, it is a CPU Cooler after all 😊…
However, if it’s not too bothersome… you can put different colors for AIO and Air to satisfy some readers.
By the way, …do you have in your schedule to review ThermalRight PS 120/120EVO?
I believe, it can level or beat Arctic LF (maybe even with its promo-price) in Performance Per Price ratio.

  2. Noctua is just one of the apples of the PC world, brand recognition but only make overpriced barely passable gear, some of their fans here in AU are like $70 each, for fkn fans, they are an uppity brand that doesn’t deserve the adoration they get.
