Thermaltake Toughpower SFX(L) 1000W Gold PSU Review

The Thermaltake Toughpower SFX 1000W Gold is a powerfull small factor PSU, compatible with the proprierty SFX-L form factor, despite its “SFX” word in its name. It achieves high performance, it has a 12VHPWR (600W) connector and it passes all corresponding ATX v3.0 transient response tests. The cherry on top is that it isn’t noisy, at normal operating conditions. 

Thermaltake is among the few brands with enough SFX and SFX-L units in its portfolio, with 12VHPWR connectors. There is a problem, though, with the naming scheme in the 1000W model. Although its name includes the word “SFX,” it is an SFX-L unit, meaning it is a bit larger than a standard SFX PSU. This can create confusion among buyers, so to wrap up, the 750W and 850W  Toughpower SFX models are indeed SFX, while the 1000W model is SFX-L. I would suggest TT’s marketing team change ASAP the model name, but this will take some time because they will also need to change the packaging, the labels, and other marketing material.

Given that the 1000W Toughpower small factor unit follows the SFX-L format, which SilverStone first introduced, I cannot directly compare it with other SFX models with more compact dimensions. Hence it is more challenging to achieve high performance. Thankfully there are enough SFX-L offerings in the market. Ok, not so many, but still enough, so this Toughpower model won’t be left alone in the field.
