As you may already know, Windows needs a valid key to be activated. Unfortunately, depending on the device (e.g., laptop) or the type of license (e.g., OEM), you can’t activate another device with the same key (without a Microsoft account, at least). When you upgrade your BIOS (occasionally) or change a motherboard, things get even more complicated. But what can you do when you have a spare key from another PC that you would like to use on a newer device or after issues with a BIOS upgrade?
Well, this Quick Tips article is here to save the day. All you need is time and a telephone. After following this guide, your key will be activated on another device. You only need to know some essential things and be ready to go the Microsoft way.
Things you will need
- A valid Windows Product key.
- You should know your Windows Product key.
- Your device on which the key was used initially should be or appear offline. Otherwise, (occasionally) it might not work or be deactivated after a while (usually after a Windows Update).
- A telephone device.
- An active telephone connection.
How To
- First, you should have Windows installed, and the key must be appropriate for the version you want to activate. For example, a Windows 10 key for a Windows 10 OS, a Windows XP key for a Windows XP OS, etc.
- It is best not to be connected to the Internet, but it is not essential.
- On the Windows Activation options, choose the telephone solution.
- Windows will provide you with the appropriate telephone number for your region (except Greece. Find the proper number here.)
- Dial the number on your phone.
- Choose the Windows Activation option.
- Follow the instructions provided by Microsoft. You will need your product key. It is best to write down the key provided by Microsoft that is required for activation. But don’t worry; you can listen to them again if you wish to.
- Enter the key provided by Microsoft in the corresponding boxes of your Windows installation.
That’s it! You may now enjoy your Windows installation without limitations. All you need is a valid key and a telephone. It might be old-school somehow, but if it works, it works. And that is all you can ask for, right?
