The Cooler Master GX III 850W is a strong PSU, equiped with a single 12+4 pin connector/cable set for 600W max power delivery, supporting all modern power-hungry GPUs. Behind this PSU is a newcomer in the desktop PSU business, Lite-On, mostly known for its power adapters.
The Cooler Master GX III 850W is included in my best ATX v3.x & PCIe 5.x PSU picks article.
I have evaluated so far the following members of the GX III family:
The GX III 850W is made by Lite-On, which is trying to enter the desktop PSU market, making its debut with Cooler Master. Like the other family members, with capacities ranging from 750W to 1250W, it complies with ATX v3.0 and PCIe 5.0. The change to ATX v3.1 and PCIe 5.1 is small since all CM has to do is to tell Lite-On to change the header on the PSU’s modular panel from 12VHPWR to 12V-2×6 since the 12VHPWR cable (as it is called so far) remains unchanged. Although the ATX v3.1 spec requires the new header, safer than 12VHPWR, it is looser in the hold-up time requirements, dropping the minimum threshold from 17ms to 12ms. So far, most brands have kept the same bulk caps in their ATX v3.1 PSUs, keeping the hold-up time according to the older, stricter requirements. Still, I expect most manufacturers and brands to use smaller, in-capacity bulk caps soon to save money when they meet the ATX v3.1 spec’s requirements.
The GX III 850 has Platinum efficiency in the Cybenetics scheme and a Cybenetics Standard++ (30-35 dB[A]) noise rating. CM informed me that its engineers will adjust all GX III models to make them less noisy. Once this is finished, Cybenetics will re-check all models and provide the new noise ratings.
The unit’s dimensions are standard for an 850W unit, with a depth of 160mm. Instead of the Hong Hua fan, I found that CM used a mediocre Yate Loon fan among the higher-capacity members of the GX III family. I’m afraid I have to disagree with this change, and I am skeptical about whether this fan will be able to outlive the extended warranty.
