The OEM is HEC, trying to enter the high-end platforms club. The PCB is small but uses large heatsinks to keep the cooling fan’s speeds low, thus restricting noise output. The VRMs handing the minor rails are installed onto a large daughter board to save space, while the 12V FETs are on the PCB’s solder side. Typically, a half-bridge topology is used along with an LLC resonant controller. On the secondary side, we only find Teapo SC caps, which don’t have high specs, and lots of polymer caps by Elite. Given the ten-year warranty that covers this product, I expected to find better caps on the secondary side. The same goes for the fan that uses a rifle bearing, not a fluid dynamic one.

Given that, be quiet! products are most popular in the EU market, especially Germany, where 230V input is standard, and the operating conditions are normal; without extremely hot weather, the Teapo SC caps will survive the ten-year warranty, but at 100-115V voltage input and high operating temperatures, it won’t be as easy. Still,  I believe be quiet! put the numbers down before it decided to offer such an extended warranty in all markets. At some point, I will have to run my cap endurance tests to find out what is happening. My industry contacts tell me that the use of high-end Japanese caps is primarily for marketing and doesn’t serve a real purpose since even an extended ten-year warranty is possible for not caps without fancy specs, but this is something that I cannot confirm.

  1. Aris, will you be doing a review of the be quiet! Straight Power 12? I’d like to buy the 850W version and I’d love to know your opinion of it.

    1. I should add that I also value customer service and RMA simplicity in Europe, tbh I only heard bad things about TT support and good things about be quiet, which could flip the balance even if TT GF3 is the better unit.

  2. Just a note on this PSU – the 24pin ATX Power Cable is only 550mm long so can be a very tight fit in a mid sized case like the Phanteks P600S.

  3. Hi aris, are these non japanese caps enough to discard the psu considering the overall performance? It’s the cheapest atx 3.0 psu in europe, rmx shift and toughpower gf3 are 50€ more expensive.

    1. If the price difference is that large, go for the be quiet! unit. These guys seem to trust it a lot, to give it such a long warranty, after all.

    2. Does this review apply to the 1000 watt version too? I’m not very knowledgeable so I don’t know if quality varies a lot between versions.

  4. I wish you could review the MSI MPG A850G PCIE5 psu which is the closest competitor in terms of price and specs.

  5. After having coil whine on Vertex Gx 1200 which i paid 350 EUROS i bought the Be quiet 12M 1000w 205 Euros for my rtx 4090 and there is no more coil whine or buzzing in sleep or idle.

Im happy with it for now.
