TerraMaster F4 SSD: Silent and Solid State Performance

The TerraMaster F4 SSD is a compact, M.2 NVMe-exclusive NAS designed to deliver high-speed, low-latency performance in a small form factor. Supporting up to four NVMe SSDs, the F4 SSD eliminates the bottlenecks associated with traditional SATA-based storage and is engineered for silent operation.

In an era where M.2 NVMe prices continue to fall and home networks and personal storage needs grow faster by the year, TerraMaster is seizing the moment with their new class of NAS systems: compact, affordable, and entirely flash-based. The F4 SSD is the company’s latest effort (after the unveiling of the F8 and F8 Plus, last year) to offer performance and convenience without the usual bulk or noise of traditional spinning-disk enclosures.

Powered by an Intel N95 quad-core processor and 8 GB of DDR5 memory (expandable to 32 GB), it supports hardware-level encryption. It is optimized for multi-threaded workloads, including media streaming, backup, and light virtualization. Its 5 GbE LAN port provides a theoretical maximum throughput of over 600 MB/s, making it suitable for users with high-bandwidth requirements.

The unit supports a maximum of 32 TB of SSD storage, and its solid-state-only design keeps operational noise under 19 dB. TerraMaster’s TOS operating system provides access to containerized applications, VPN server support, snapshot-based backup, and enables you to run services like Plex and Jellyfin.

But does smaller really mean better, or is this just a stripped-down novelty? We dig into the details of what makes the F4 SSD tick, and whether it earns its place in your home or workspace.
