Uber One Membership Scam!

Uber Technologies, Inc (commonly called Uber) is an American transportation conglomerate that mainly provides taxi services where individuals can hail a taxi (Uber) in an app on their phone. [Source Wikipedia]

Some statistics:

The company operates in approximately 70 countries and 10,500 cities. The company has over 131 million monthly active users and 5.4 million active drivers worldwide. The company has an average of 23 million daily trips through all these services combined.

While we visited Taiwan during Computex, I got an offer from Uber for a month’s free trial of its program Uber One, which offers lower fares for trips. I didn’t think of it much, and I applied for this membership immediately and saved enough money during my stay in Taiwan. Little did I know that there is no way to cancel this membership!

Twenty-eight days after the Uber One membership started, I got a charge on my credit card for the monthly fee, and I realized that I should proceed ASAP with its cancellation, only to find that there is no way to do that!

According to Uber:

To cancel your membership in the Uber app:

  1. Tap the profile icon.
  2. Tap “Uber One.”
  3. Scroll and tap “Manage Membership.”
  4. Select “End Membership” and then “End Membership” again to cancel your membership.

Up to step (3), everything is there, but the problem is at (4), where I cannot find an “End Membership” option!

I also tried the desktop Uber version but couldn’t find an “End Membership” option, so my only option was to search the net. The opinions were divided. Some users claimed that you cannot cancel an Uber One subscription within 48 hours before its renewal, while others claimed that you can only cancel it if you are in the same country that you activated it! Finally, I found a thread on Reddit, “Why can’t I cancel my uber one subscription?” which helped me understand the situation.

From the aforementioned Reddit thread, I realized many users were in the same boat as me once they tried to cancel Uber One. Thankfully one of them provided a solution, which is hard to follow, but it can give you results. In his words:

So after you log in to your Uber account, you follow this link.

I waited, and waited, for more than 30 minutes.

After a long wait, Uber’s support kicked me out of the chat window.

Uber support sent me an email, to which I replied, stating that I wanted to cancel my subscription.

This is ridiculous! Have a subscription that you cannot end, and spend hours trying to contact Uber support to do that for you! Uber should be ashamed of this shady tactic it used to grab more money from our pockets!
