It is a fact that DDR5 memory is steadily taking over the market share. Although DDR5 prices are still high, it is more affordable than its initial release. Moreover, lower prices are expected shortly. After AMD’s AM5 release, with only DDR5 support, it might be time worth considering upgrading from DDR4 if you plan for a fresh build. Intel still offers DDR4 support for its latest line of processors, but this generation is aging. Well-aged, but the future follows closely. So, it is time to move on. This article covers you if you plan to upgrade or start a new build. For those who prefer to stick to DDR4, we will soon release The best DDR4 motherboards. For now, The best DDR5 motherboards, Intel and AMD, are here to help you choose what suits you best.
Best High-End Mainboards
This section refers to those who need a top-of-the-line product without mind spending a respectable sum of money. Considering the complete feature set, we also focus on suggesting the best products at a reasonably high price but not the most expensive.
Intel
Asus ROG Maximus Z790 Hero
Asus’ top motherboard is one of the best available offers but at a sky-high price. If you are planning to get the jack of all trades and are willing to pay for it, then this beast is all you will ever need. It is a perfect match for an i7 13700K, but paired with an i9 13900KS, only sky would be the limit. Enjoy responsibly!
- 20+1 power stages rated for 90A
- Perfect match for a power-hungry i9 13900KS beast
- PCIe 5.0 support
- Handy BIOS flashback button
- Thunderbolt 4
- Wi-Fi6E
- Over-the-top quality and performance
- Sky-high price
- LAN 2.5Gbps feels a bit odd for a top-of-a-line product
- The design seems a bit dated
AMD
MSI MPG X670E Carbon WIFI
This was a tough decision. Although MSI’s offer is excellent, I had to change the Asus board, which was initially my choice. This is because lately, there are reports of 7000X3D and ASUS (and possibly Gigabyte) mainboards failing in combination. Although it might be just a single incident, I believe it is best to avoid suggesting these products until further investigation. I didn’t find any reports for MSI boards, though it might also be an issue for its products. BIOS updates were released or about to be released to fix this issue. This article will be updated as long as more information is available. That said, MSI’s mainboard is an excellent offer for your new build at a high but reasonable price, considering the increased platform cost.
- Solid VRM
- Build quality
- PCIe 5.0 support
- Wi-Fi6E
- Sleek design
- Quite pricey
- Realtek’s WiFi driver is reported to be inadequate
Best Balanced Mainboards
This section refers to those who plan to spend a reasonable sum that won’t break the bank. This is what balance means in tech, in my opinion. And as you may notice, balance doesn’t mean cheap features. All the necessary needs are more than covered at a reasonable price.
Intel
MSI MAG Z790 Tomahawk WiFi
MSI is well-regarded as a mainboard manufacturer, and with a good reason. Its products are solid and at a street price, as well. This is also the case with MAG Z790 Tomahawk WiFi. This motherboard is your best bet if you need a feature-rich board at a fair price.
- Solid 16-phase VRMs, rated at 90A
- Build quality
- PCIe 5.0 support
- BIOS Flash button
- Sleek design
- No PCIe 5.0 storage support
- A bit pricier than the rest of the competition
AMD
GIGABYTE X670 AORUS Elite AX
As I already mentioned, some issues regarding 7000X3Ds and possibly some motherboards might need to be addressed. Considering this fact, Gigabyte’s offer is a solid and feature-rich board at a street price. It is a decent choice for those who need to pay for all the necessary features without worrying about spending too much. Still, MSI’s mainboards at this price range are a worth-considering choice, but Aorus Elite AX might be best for the average techie.
- Solid VRM
- Build quality
- Decent feature set considering the price and the competition offers
- Realtek Ethernet might be challenging
- BIOS is a bit dated
Best Budget Mainboards
This section refers to those needing a product that would be more than adequate for the average techie, but the price might be challenging. Though pairing these boards with a high-end processor might not be ideal, a solid mid-range chip would be a much better choice. You get what you paid for at a decent balance between features and price tag.
Intel
Asus Prime B760-Plus
This section was challenging, too. After spending time trying to figure out what would be the best suggestion, I decided to explain myself a bit. The most suitable product’s price was the Asrock B760 PRO RS. But I feel more comfortable suggesting Asus Prime B760-Plus. Still, the price is notably higher than Asrock’s decent board.
Moreover, at this price range, it might be worth considering choosing Asus Prime Z790-P for a reasonably higher tag. But that’s not the whole case, considering that B760-Plus is a decent B760 board rather than the Prime Z790, which is a more typical Z790 mainboard. So, my final decision is to suggest the golden ratio between these products, Asus Prime B760-Plus. If you want to save some bucks, you can choose the much cheaper Asrock B760 PRO RS, and if you are in the comfy zone to spend for a typical Z790, then Asus Prime Z790-P might suit you best. I leave the final choice to you.
- Build quality
- Decent for a solid mid-range build
- Higher price than the rest of the competition considering the features
AMD
MSI MAG B650M MORTAR WIFI AM5 mATX
Unlike Intel’s price issues, MSI’s board is a decent offer, but with caveats. Suppose you want an ATX mainboard around the same price. Worth considering MSI PRO. You can read its full review on our Site, as well.
- High performance
- Strong FETs on the VRMs
- Advanced Realtek ALC4080 Audio Codec
- Transient response is not that good
- No PCIe Gen 5.0 support
- Quite expensive
Epilogue
Choosing the best DDR5 motherboards proved to be a daunting task. Hopefully, the price tags will improve shortly, and better offers will be a thing. We plan to update this article when better offers and resolutions to known issues will be available. So, stay tuned!
The ASUS PRIME B760-PLUS has been selling at right around $100 for the last couple of months now. That’s what I paid for mine in early February, and it’s fantastic!
