The OEM is Helly Technology, the mother company of 1st Player. The PCB is small but not densely populated with parts. The overall design is clean, without any cables blocking the airflow. The main transformer is surrounded by heatsinks, which cool down the FETs regulating the 12V rail. These FETs are installed on the PCB’s business side. There is nothing important to see on the PCB’s backside since Helly prefers to solder most parts on the other side. On this PCB side, you will only find four shunt resistors.
The soldering quality is satisfactory, and the capacitors that Helly used are of high quality. The FETs don’t belong to tier #1 manufacturers, but they will do the job. The cooling fan is by Hong Hua, which has proven that it can make reliable products. Besides the APFC converter, we find a half-bridge topology and an LLC resonant converter on the unit’s primary side. On the secondary side, a synchronous rectification scheme generates the 12V rail, which feeds a pair of DC-DC converters that generate the minor rails. These converters are installed on vertical boards to occupy less space.
It is good to see a new ATX v3.1 platform by a less popular OEM since it provides more brand choices. So far, CWT had the lion’s share in the ATX v3.0 and v3.1 PSUs with its trendy CSZ platform, but new designs are starting to emerge, trying to share a piece of the market pie. I guess this will push CWT and the rest of the big OEMs to improve their products further, and we will finally start to see price reductions as the competition gets more challenging.
