Visiting a Capacitor Manufacturer in Dongguan (Chengxing Electronic)

You will probably notice that we haven’t had any news posts or reviews in the past two days. This is because our team traveled to China to visit a capacitor manufacturer in Dongguan, Chengxing Electronic or ChengX, as most of you probably know this brand. According to data gathered several years ago, this brand doesn’t belong in the top ones, and in an effort to change that, they invited us to show us their manufacturing lines and potential. It is intriguing to visit a capacitor-making factory, so we grabbed this opportunity since we had already planned a trip to China to visit other factories as well.

The company’s name is Dong Guan Cheng Xing Electronics (ChengX hereafter), and its general manager and owner is Mr Cai Weibin. The latter founded ChengX in 1998, and the product range is:

  • Aluminum Electrolytic capacitors
  • Aluminum Foil
  • Special equipment for capacitors

The factory’s building area is 40,000m2, and 700 employees currently work there, producing 4.5 billion caps annually!

ChengX plans to build a factory in Vietnam to enrich its clientele and sell in the US without the extra fees that apply to Chinese-made products. It is also cooperating with the Japan Capacitor R&D center to improve its products, which I find highly interesting since some of the well-known capacitor manufacturers have their base in Japan.

The company’s development history.

Most of the production goes to power supplies and, more specifically, power bricks for laptops. Note that capacitor quality matters the most in laptop chargers because they are typically fanless.

I noticed this board in the briefing room.

Among other tests to ensure high quality, ChengX takes a sample of the production line and uses these huge ovens to operate it at 85C-105C, depending on the capacitor’s temperature rating, for 2000h or more to check if it meets its specifications! I only saw this kind of testing in Great Wall, but with much fewer ovens/samples. The amount of energy required for this kind of testing is crazy!

I will write some follow-up articles regarding my visit to ChengX’s factory soon. I have many interesting things to share! There will also be a video (or videos) about this visit.
