darkFlash UPMOST 1250W ATX v3.0 PSU Review

Box & Bundle

The sample arrived in a plain white box, so instead of box photos, here is a photo of one of my cats, Riris, sleeping in style.

The PSU’s dimensions are extra-compact for its maximum power. The design is weird, with the square holes of the restrictive fan grille and the improper alignment of the Zero RPM Fan switch at the PSU’s front side. The white paint job saves the day, though.

The modular panel hosts twelve sockets, one of them for the 12VHPWR cable. If they used a 12V-2×6 connector, this PSU would be ATX v3.1 compliant.

Cables

Modular Cables
Description Cable Count Connector Count (Total) Gauge In Cable Capacitors
ATX connector 20+4 pin (600mm) 1 1 18AWG No
8 pin EPS12V (700mm) /4+4 pin EPS12V (+150mm) 2 4 18AWG No
6+2 pin PCIe (700mm) 3 3 16AWG No
12+4 pin PCIe (700mm) (600W) 1 1 16-26AWG No
SATA (500mm+150mm+150mm+150mm) 2 8 18AWG No
SATA (500mm+150mm) / 4-pin Molex (+150mm+150mm) 2 4 / 4 18AWG No
FDD Adapter (+100mm) 1 1 22AWG No
AC Power Cord (1380mm) – C13 coupler 1 1 17AWG

It is not typical to see four EPS connectors, even in a strong PSU like this. To the best of my knowledge, super high-end mainboards have 3x EPS connectors unless we are talking about special server-grade mainboards. These four connectors are in two cables, so you cannot fully exploit them, especially with the standard 18AWG gauges. I expected to see 16AWG gauges on the ATX and EPS cables. The number of connectors is adequate; the same goes for cable length and the distance between the peripheral connectors. Lastly, the PSU’s capacity is on the border for using a heavy-duty IEC C19 cable with the corresponding C20 receptacle.

  1. Is it just me or could the PSU have performed significantly better in ripple suppression and transient response if they hadn’t gone with such an extremely low amount of secondary caps on the secondary side?
I count 27 caps or which many are fairly small. Other manufacturers like Seasonic are liable to use over 50 caps in that power class.

Yes the form factor is small but they definitely had space for more caps on the breakout board. They cheaped out, which is a pity.

  2. UPMOST? XD
It’s nice to see that there is so much optimism and imagination around.
    This should lead to improvement.
