The semi-passive mode lasts long enough, but soon the PSU’s fan speed increases and its noise output exceeds 40 dBA for a not-so-short period. This is why the heat at the PSU’s internals went high, so the fan has to spin fast to bring the operating temperatures to normal levels. The semi-passive mode should last shorter, not to allow for such high temperatures, which force the fan to start spinning at high speeds (>1800 RPM), to cool down the components. After the noisy period described above, the PSU’s fan drops to the 35-40 dBA region in the 550- 600W range, and at 600W it is within 30-35 dBA, where it remains till the load at 12V reaches 900W. Then we have a long period of 35-40 dBA, and with higher than 1450W loads, the fan’s noise exceeds 40 dBA. Generally, the fan speed profile is aggressive because this platform requires strong airflow to cool down its parts. The small PCB is the culprit behind that.

The 230V fan speed profile is a bit looser at high speeds, with a smaller period of operation at above 40 dBA.
