Western Digital seperates Hard Drive and Flash Storage in two different companies

The formal split of Western Digital and SanDisk has started to take shape. The company’s slow growth and product management challenges eventually led to the decision to split. This division aims to help set clear goals for each department and create two more adaptable and agile businesses.

Originally announced a couple of days after a failed Kioxia merger proposal in October of 2023, Western Digital set the goal of effectively splitting the hard disk and flash storage divisions. Since then the company has made great progress, establishing legal entities in numerous countries of interest. Each company will have to manage its financials as well.

Following the split, all products that use hard drives will be listed on the Western Digital website, including not only the traditional HDDs but also the external HDDs sold under the SanDisk Professional brand.

On the other hand, SanDisk will be responsible for everything flash, anything from USB drives and plain old memory cards to their high-end and enterprise flash storage solutions. In addition, each of the divided parts will now have its dedicated support.

The NAND-focused SanDisk will be led by current CEO David Goeckeler. Irving Tan, currently serving as executive vice president of worldwide operations, will assume the CEO role for Western Digital.

You can find more details by visiting the FAQ section on either the SanDisk or Western Digital website.
