The Reasons Behind the Delayed Launch of the AMD Ryzen 9000 CPUs

AMD announced that it postponed the launch of its Zen 5-powered Ryzen 9000 processors by several days. The brand had scheduled the launch of the Ryzen 7 9700X and Ryzen 5 9600X processors for July 31 but will release them on August 8 instead. The higher-end Ryzen 9 9950X and Ryzen 9 9900X will not be released until August 15. This is said to have been caused by an issue with the testing process for packaged Ryzen 9000 series processors and mislabeled Ryzen processors.

A recent review from the BiliBili platform (credit to @995Pro) revealed that AMD’s Ryzen 7 9700X was mistakenly labeled as a Ryzen 9 9700X. Marked Ryzen 9 boxes have already been shipped to retail outlets. While this may seem like a minor issue, AMD would need to recall all its shipped products to fix the information on the box!

The recall process has delayed the processor launches. AMD has pulled back all Ryzen 9000 units delivered to retailers and OEMs globally. These impacted chips will be returned to retailers after probably inquiring about the laser-etching or printing markings on the chip’s surface.

An official statement from AMD stated that they identified an issue with the packaged product testing process for Ryzen 9000 series processors that could result in a small number of parts reaching the market that don’t meet the required quality standards. So, the flawed markings may not be the sole reason for this delay in the new Zen 5 launch.

Sharing the below statement from Jack Huynh, AMD SVP and GM of Computing and Graphics.

“We appreciate the excitement around Ryzen 9000 series processors.  During final checks, we found the initial production units that were shipped to our
channel partners did not meet our full quality expectations.  Out of an abundance of caution and to maintain the highest quality experiences for every Ryzen user, we are working with our channel partners to replace the initial production units with fresh units.

As a result, there will be a short delay in retail availability. The Ryzen 7 9700X and Ryzen 5 9600X processors will now go on sale on August 8th
and the Ryzen 9 9950X and Ryzen 9 9900X processors will go on sale on August 15th.

We pride ourselves in providing a high-quality experience for every Ryzen user, and we look forward to our fans having a great experience with the new Ryzen 9000 series.”
