Many Microsoft 365 users experienced disruptions on Thursday (12 September 2024), reporting issues accessing popular applications like Outlook, Excel, and Teams. The outage was linked to a change made by a third-party internet service provider (ISP), which caused service interruptions for thousands of users.
Microsoft confirmed that the issue stemmed from the ISP’s environment and noted that the provider has since reverted the change, allowing services to start recovering. “We’ve worked with the third-party ISP and confirmed the issue. We’re now seeing signs of recovery and are closely monitoring the situation to ensure full restoration,” Microsoft stated on its official cloud website.
Earlier in the day, Microsoft posted on X (formerly Twitter) acknowledging the issue: “We’re investigating an issue where users may be unable to access multiple Microsoft 365 services.” The company directed administrators to refer to incident code MO888473 in their admin centers for more details.
Downdetector, a website that tracks outages, reported that over 22,800 users flagged issues with Microsoft 365 within the last 24 hours. The outage led to frustration across social media platforms, where users shared their experiences. One X member wrote, “Microsoft 365 and Teams are down, so it’s a lazy morning for me.”
This incident follows a similar outage last month in New Zealand, which Microsoft quickly resolved. As of now, Microsoft continues to monitor the situation to ensure a complete recovery of its services.
