Google Chrome Gets Smarter

Google has rolled out one of the biggest updates in Chrome’s history by embedding its Gemini AI model directly into the browser. The move turns Chrome into what Google calls an “AI-native” browser, changing how people search, read, and get things done online.

At the center of the update is Gemini in Chrome, a new browsing assistant that appears in a side panel. With it, users can ask questions about the page they’re reading, get quick summaries of long articles, or pull information from multiple open tabs without switching windows.

Chrome’s address bar, known as the omnibox, is also getting smarter. A new AI Mode allows users to ask complex questions directly from the bar and receive AI-generated answers, along with relevant links, without leaving the page they’re on.

Google is also preparing AI agents for Chrome. These will be able to handle everyday tasks such as ordering groceries or making reservations, while keeping users in control of each step.

Writing online gets easier too. The “Help Me Write” feature can assist with drafting emails, reviews, and posts in almost any text box on the web.

Security is another major focus. Chrome now uses AI to block scams more effectively, manage compromised passwords, and reduce spammy notifications. Google says these protections already prevent billions of unwanted alerts each day.

For personalization, Chrome adds AI-generated themes, letting users create custom browser designs by choosing a mood, style, and color.

The new AI features are rolling out gradually, starting with English-language desktop users in the U.S., with more countries and languages coming soon.

With this update, Chrome moves beyond being just a browser. Google’s goal is clear: turn it into an intelligent assistant that understands what users are doing and helps them work faster, safer, and more efficiently online.
