I have a media server with 15x 3.5" hard drives in a large full tower ATX case.  The HDDs are a mix of NAS and Enterprise drives of either 16 or 24TB capacity, all 7200RPM.  Mostly Seagate, some Toshiba.  I have a Seasonic Focus Plus Gold 850W PSU currently and as I have recently replaced some older, lower capacity drives I started having issues with drives having delayed write issues and ultimately dropping offline. Ultimately, I determined the cause was too much power-splitting of SATA power cables and have rectified the issue by removing a SATA power splitter from the system and replacing with a couple Molex-to-SATA adapters.  As I replace more drives I am concerned that I will run into power limitations again so I am looking for the "best" power supply for my use-case.

Specific concerns/items to address are:

  • 5V power output
  • number of SATA connectors/cables
  • length of cables/distance between connectors

With all that in mind, does anyone with a similar system have a recommendation?

As I know Corsair typically has strong minor rails for these situations. Most other brands go to lower combined power on the minor rails, because modern systems don't need so strong minor rails unless they have a ton of ARGB devices.

Also feel free to ask in our discord server for more info

Thanks.  I'm leaning towards the HX1500i now.

I ended up going with a Seasonic Prime PX1600 instead.  It was about the same price as the Corsair when I add in the cost of the extra cables I need.  Hopefully it's a good choice.
