Constant Freezes On Discord, Twitch, OperaGX, etc.? Try This!

Windows 11 has been available for quite some time, but Microsoft still struggles to persuade its users to upgrade. One core reason is the so-called issues that many users face occasionally (or not). And things are challenging when a new feature causes more problems than it intends to solve. The Windows 11 24H2 Update introduced new features but wasn’t hassle-free. Many users complain about freezing/tearing on Discord, Chrome, Twitch, etc., especially when alt-tabbed. Usually, the solution would have been to reinstall these apps, uninstall and reinstall the GPU drivers, or disable hardware acceleration. That’s not the case anymore, and if you tried the above suggestions and they didn’t work out, you can try this workaround, which might help, just in case. You never know.

Always back up your Registry. It is best to try to reinstall the apps, uninstall and reinstall the GPU drivers (DDU is the way to go), or disable hardware acceleration before messing with the Windows Registry.

The Workaround

  • Open the Registry Editor (regedit.exe). The best way is to press the Windows key and R combined on your keyboard and type “regedit.exe” in the pop-up window.

  • Navigate to [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Dwm]
  • Right-click on it and add this value: “OverlayMinFPS=dword: 00000000
  • Save (Add).
  • Exit the Registry Editor and restart your device.
  • Alternatively, you can open the Windows Notepad and type: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Dwm] “OverlayMinFPS=dword: 00000000
  • Save it as mpofix.reg (It is essential to change the file extension to .reg rather than .txt for the solution to take effect. Don’t forget it.).
  • Restart your device.

Hopefully, this will do the trick. The aforementioned issue doesn’t seem to affect the Firefox browser, so you can check if the problem is present on Mozilla’s browser before messing with the Registry Editor. You can always switch to the Firefox gang as well. Either way, the choice is yours.
