Thermaltake Toughpower SFX 750W Gold PSU Review

Epilogue

Load regulation is loose, and the transient response at non-ATX v3.0 scenarios is mediocre. On the other hand, ripple suppressions is good, hold-up time is extended, vampire power is low, and the platform is highly efficient, leading to a high overall performance score. The protection feature need adjustment, though, especially at 12V, where the over current protection triggering point is sky-high. HKC, the manufacturer of TT’s new SFX Toughpower models, needs to fix all problems I found in protection features, to prevent the PSUs from failing and, even worse, destroying any PC parts. If/when a PSU fails, you cannot know if it will “take” a part with it.

With a price tag of 170 dollars, the Toughpower 750W SFX is 30 dollars more expensive than its 850W sibling. The $30 difference is significant, but there is a catch. Although TT confirmed that these units ship with a 600W 12VHPWR cable, several Amazon reviews indicate a 300W setting on the PCIe 5.0 connector, making this PSU unsuitable for RTX 4080 graphics cards. On the other hand, it won’t have a problem with RTX 4070 even if the 12VHPWR cable is set at 300W, which is what the ATX v3.0 spec recommends.

The Toughpower SFX 750W is rated as Gold in the 80 PLUS scheme but achieves a Platinum rating in the Cybenetics scheme, taking the lead in the average efficiency chart among several SFX models with similar capacity. The 5VSB rail doesn’t achieve as high efficiency, while the APFC converter needs tuning for higher PF readings at 230V.

At 170 dollars, the Thermaltake Toughpower SFX 750W costs the same as the Corsair SF750 Platinum. The latter is not PCIe 5.0 ready, though, showing its age. Investing in a PCIe 5.0 ready PSU to be future-proof is advisable.
