The MSI MAG A-GLS line consists of four models with capacities ranging from 650W to 1000W. In today’s review I will look at the strongest member of the line, and check how it performs against other offerings in the 1000W category.
The MSI MAG A1000GLS PCIE5 is (or will be) included in my best ATX v3.x & PCIe 5.x PSU picks article.
MSI is trying hard to dominate the PSU category by lowering prices to extremely low levels in some PSU models, which may sound good, but in fact, it isn’t that beneficial for various reasons. There is a saying in my country, Greece, which I will try to translate into English. Never bargain with a handyman because he will never actually lower his work fees, but he will instead reduce the quality of the parts that he will use to perform the repairs. The same can be applied to the industry. When you are after the lowest possible prices, you will have to lower production costs, which will eventually affect quality.
After the partially irrelevant (to this product) first paragraph, let me say a few words about the sample in hand, the MSI MAG A1000GLS. CWT makes the two strongest members of this family, while Huntkey makes the two lower wattage ones. That’s right, this is Huntkey’s debut in the worldwide market after several years of absence. The 1000W and 850W units are tested and certified by Cybenetics, while the 750W and 650W units are tested but not yet certified by Cybenetics.
The MAG A1000GLS is Platinum certified in the Cybenetics standard, and it also has a Cybenetics A- noise rating at 115V input. At 230V input, it achieves a Cybenetics A noise rating. Its dimensions are normal to compact for a 1000W PSU, with a depth of 150mm. At the time of the review, I was unaware of the product’s price. The only thing I know is that MSI tried to make these PSUs as quiet as possible, hence the “S” in the GLS, which means “silent.”
