It looks like AMD might be changing course regarding the upcoming Radeon RX 9060 XT. According to the latest rumors, the company is strongly considering cancelling the 8GB version of the GPU and focusing instead on a 16GB model—and frankly, that might be the smartest move.
When AMD took the stage at Computex 2025, many expected the reveal of both 8GB and 16GB variants of the RX 9060 XT. However, fresh reports suggest that the 8GB SKU may never see a full market release. Even though AMD has already manufactured some 8GB units, the company seems hesitant to launch a product that could immediately face the same criticism Nvidia received with its 8GB GeForce RTX 5060 Ti.
At this point, AMD has several options:
-
Launch the existing 8GB stock quickly, then phase it out.
-
Limit the 8GB version to specific regions with weaker currencies.
-
Rebrand or repurpose the 8GB chips into a lower-tier product like a future Radeon RX 9050 XT.
-
Or, scrap the 8GB SKU entirely, focusing on the stronger 16GB card.
Given the disastrous reception of Nvidia’s 8GB RTX 5060 Ti, scrapping the 8GB RX 9060 XT seems like the most logical move. Reviewers have shown that 8GB isn’t enough for modern games, leading to significant performance issues and stuttering compared to 16GB alternatives.
Leaked specs for the RX 9060 XT show it with 2048 stream processors, a 128-bit memory bus, and game/boost clocks of 2620/3230 MHz, respectively. It’s built on AMD’s new RDNA 4 architecture and the latest 4nm node, but no matter how powerful the core is, gaming performance will suffer if the VRAM can’t keep up.
According to Moore’s Law Is Dead, an AMD partner claimed that production of the 8GB model has already been reduced or halted. At best, if the 8GB version launches, it could only be available briefly before disappearing from shelves.
In the broader view, cancelling the 8GB RX 9060 XT would be a net positive for the PC market. It would prevent AMD from repeating Nvidia’s mistake and preserve the strong momentum it built with the successful launches of the Radeon RX 9070 XT and RX 9070 earlier this year.
With Computex 2025 just around the corner, we won’t have to wait long to determine AMD’s final decision. Whatever happens, it’ll be fascinating to see how the Radeon RX 9060 XT stacks up against Nvidia’s RTX 5060 Ti — and whether it can offer better performance and value.
Stay tuned!
